Hi Doggie Defenders
I have started to notice something since I set on my journey to help abandoned animals. It's a very sad state of affairs when people phone you looking for a dog and you can no longer fully trust what they are telling you. Unfortunately due to the number of bad people out there, it makes us weary to trust true loving and caring people. The last thing we want to do is give a dog that has already had a rough start to life another bad experience. So my question to you is how do we seperate the bad from the good without upsetting those many good people out there.

  1. Hi Tracy,
This is horrifying. especially considering how badly most dogs want to trust people. But we should consider what can be done about it. Human adoption services are quite meticulous about screening people, checking their homes and backgrounds. There are databases that make it possible to link people to known criminals - pedophiles, for example, and so on. Basically, it involves doing detective work and gathering intelligence. Do we have a database of know animal abusers and animal abusing organizations? What means are used to check adopters and how can they be improved? Sadly, this probably means more resources and money, but consider the costs (apart form the horrible emotional toll on the animals) involved in re-rescuing and re-re-homing dogs after they fall into the hands of sub-human scum (I had to think about that description for a minute - not bad hey?). Maybe this would be a worthwhile thing to look at. Animal cruelty is a crime, and we would be doing a public service by rooting out and stigmatizing the sociopaths who carry it out.

  2. I feel that if the prospective owners can prove that hey have had looked after animals before and only lost them due to old age or sickness, they can be considered as likely good owners again.I have adopted many animals and old age has claimed them or cancer of the liver etc. I am too old to adopt any more and still have one adopted Terrier who is 15. I support the Animal Anti Cruelty Leage in PE who do a wonderful thing as well. They have a little second hand shop that sells donated gifts and it really has worked over the years.
I do wish the Karroo towns had one as well as most dont even have vets or kennels.
